Sadane (1981) - Album Review

Blue Funk's Rating: 5 out of 10

A1 One-Way Love Affair
A2 You're The One For Me
A3 The Fool In Me
A4 Never Gonna Stop This Heart Of Mine
A5 Standing In The Shadows Of Love

B1 Sit Up
B2 Girl Come On (Let's Get It On) - Best track
B3 Love Can't Wait
B4 Midnight Love Dance - Worst track
B5 Make Up Your Mind

This album is rather uneven, as there are both inspired and uninspired tunes here. Although produced by the great Mtume, some songs on here do not stand the test of time and scream "80s!" and not in a good sort of way either. Overall most tracks are okay, with side A being generally agreeable but nothing particularly memorable. The stand out on side A was an energetic and moving take of a Four Tops classic "Standing in the Shadows of Love." A1 - A3 are ok, A4 is a run of the mill slow jam. Side B contains both the best and the worst track of the album, but B1 & B2 make the album a worthwhile purchase despite its weak tracks. Both B1 & B2 are excellent dance numbers, with B2 being an irresistible jam perfect for the dance floor.  B4 attempts to recapture this energy, but feels overproduced, uninspired, and dated. B3 is another okay slow jam but nothing revolutionary. The album finishes off on a more uptempo track that fares better than B4 but falls short of the energy of B1 & B2. Not an amazing album overall, but definitely worth it if you can find it for an affordable price.
