Bernard Purdie - Shaft

This album is packed full of tight grooves, amazing horns, keys and some of the fattest drums you've ever heard. Side 1 kicks off with "Shaft" and adds a stronger funk feel to it, adding more horns and taking away the strings present in the original. I was immediately knocked out by Purdie's incredible drumming, which is mixed fabulously. The drums on this album KICK. Track 2 on both sides are more mellow numbers, but they are still incredibly soulful and masterfully done. "Attica," "Changes," and "Butterfingers" bring back the funk and rock incredibly hard. There are so many breaks on this album, it is incredible, but the best track on here is the irresistible b-boy funk that is "Changes."

There was not an unenjoyable moment on this album, the selections were tight, the playing was fabulous, and the album felt very cohesive. Rare is an album that feels this well put together and without a throwaway. With only 6 songs, the album moves fairly quickly, but any additions would have taken away, as I think it would be difficult to increase the length of the album without losing its cohesiveness.

This album is a crate digger's delight, a breakdancer's dream, a DJ's best-friend, and essential to any serious funk collection. Highly recommended.

Blue Funk's Rating: 9/10
